What Do People Who Study Literature Do After Graduation
What Do People Who Study Literature Do After GraduationYou would recall your dorm mate, who wasnt a student of the English Department, asking you about what a reader could do. You were at a loss for words, as the question was a reflection of his ignorance on the B.A. English program. You were too tired to think of an answer, as you were thinking of your bed after barely sleeping over an essay assignment. You also encountered similar questions, prompting you to wonder if your professors must orient ansicht people.Reading would be one of the things that you and your coursemates would do, yet it could be the only thing that other students (from other departments) would see. It might be a case of timing, if not the lack of knowledge on the extent of your dedication (and apparent isolation). Great minds, coupled with great ideas, could inspire you, but there would be one instance when you wish these authors would sympathize you when you must write (and proofread) through the night. You we re aware that your perseverance could open many doors. Arranging books wont be one of those options, though.Authorship would be music to your ears, and you wouldnt have to explain your aspirations after someone, who didnt study literature, would guess about your future calling. You know that not all aspiring authors would be lucky to be a full-time novelist, so youre thinking of an academic career. You might have to back-burner that plan, as there are other (career) options. Youre excited about advertising, as you hope that it would help you get out of your shell more often. (You wouldnt blame the authors, whom you have studied these last few years.) You dont mind to start your career in journalism, hoping that it could get you close to your dream job. You dont have a clue about it, though. The people who study literature have something to look forward. You believe that good communication skills would be a prized asset that should make you a valuable employee in any company. What hap pens next? What You Must Do After GraduationFind another perspective.Lets not confuse it with your doubts. If youre committed to your craft, then you wouldnt think twice about pursuing this path. You must realize something, though. If youre good enough, then someone would pay for your skills. You may have found out that one coursemate would decide to pursue a freelancing career, as having her own time at her disposal should enable her to explore other options. Could it be the same thing with you? You should know your interests, and if there are opportunities related to it. It might not be a good idea to go on a road, as prospective employers could take it against you.Know your soft skills. You were a member of a (college) student club, where more than one member would notice the very traits that distinguished you from the other members. You may have to spend a day or two to recall specific instances, where you have shown your leadership skills or initiative. Both qualities could make you more appealing to recruiters. And you must feel good about your (good) communication skills. Dont get too far on this one, as you wonder if you should point out your generosity and other virtues that you might want to exaggerate. Study the job ad carefully, as you figure out what soft skills are being valued by employers.Write more, read more.Youre overjoyed by the fact that the days of reading and writing were behind you. It would be the opposite, though. Reading the biography of the authors of classical novels should make you realize that the study of arts would be a lifelong pursuit. It requires dedication, which could make you a hermit in a short time. notlage that your college buddies havent noticed it, as you find support from your coursemates (who feel the same way too). How often you read depends on your free time (or the lack of). There must not be any kind of pressure on this one, as you would make it a part of your routine. The same thing applies to writing, but this one could be more challenging. What are you writing about? Whom do you write for? Could you handle the rejection (if its not published)? Answer the questions truthfully, which should help you plan your writing career. Only the brave would make it.Career Change Something to Talk AboutYou might have a change of heart and switch careers down the road, but you havent crossed the bridge. Yet. Try to plant your feet firmly (so to speak). Show your willingness to learn new skill(s), as employers favor job applicants who have multitasking skills. And dont let go of the ultimate dream. If you couldnt be a novelist, then you might have to publish your very own written piece somewhere. You may want to inquire about the different rates of a contributor, as well as another job if you have lots of free time. Good luck Read all news

Among economically disadvantaged kids, black students have it especially hard.Six in 10 black students who had above-median test scores as kindergartners have been left behind b y eighth grade, compared to fewer than four in 10 white and Latino students and two in 10 Asian students. And for those who dont start out with great test scores, their mglichkeits of improvement depend on class a child from an affluent family with who scores low in kindergartenis more than twice as likely to recover andhave high test scores in eighth grade as a low-scoring kindergartener from a poor family. To break it down, a kindergartner from an affluent background with test scores in the bottom half still has a 7 in 10 chance of reaching a high socioeconomic status by the time theyre a young adult. And a disadvantaged kindergartner with test scores in the top half has approximately a 3 in 10 chance of attaining high socioeconomic status by the age of 25.By high school, its often too late, and the talent has been lost 49% of economically disadvantaged students who had above-median math scores in kindergarten have below-median scores in eighth grade. Its not just how rich or poor a c hilds family background is, either, but also how protective and enriched their home environments are.As of 2016, families in the highest income quintile spent around $8,600 per year on enrichment activities, whereas families in the lowest quintile spent around $1,700 per year. This includes things from books, school supplies, and computers to summer camps, music lessons, private tutors, and extracurricular classes.Higher socioeconomic status parents also spend more time reading to their children and it could be extrapolated that perhaps they have more time to do so, assuming that in a disadvantaged family, more children are being raised by a working single mother.By 10th grade, it was found, achievement patterns for both the privileged and the underprivileged were pretty much set. High test-scorers didnt tend to see their scores fall, and low test-scorers didnt tend to see their scores go up.No matter where they fall academically, poor tenth-graders are less likely than affluent st udents to enroll in college or to complete college if they do go.Still, theres one skill that particularly helps a student from a poor background good math skills. Essential Skills for Working with HorsesEssential Skills for Working with HorsesThe equine industry continues to have a big impact on the American economy. According to the American Horse Council Foundations 2017 Economic Impact Study, the industry was worth roughly $122 billion in 2017. The industry also employed roughly 1.74 million people, generating about $79 million in salaries, wages and benefits. Current estimates peg the horse population in the United States at about 7.2 million - with Texas, California and Florida rounding out the top three states with the most number of horses. There are many options that may be of interest to those interested in careers in the equine industry such as riding instructor, groom, veterinarian, farm manager, trainer and countless others. Those interested in a career with horses may end up pursuing some kind of special training, education or certification to enhance their job prospects in the industry. But all that aside, there are a number of k ey skills all horse industry professionals should possess in order to become experts in their fields. Here are nine of the most critical skills and abilities for those hoping to find work in the equine industry Basic Horse handhabung Skills This skill is a basic requirement for anyone working with any type of animal. All equine professionals should be comfortable working around horses in a hands-on capacity.Basic skills should include haltering, leading, picking out hooves, bathing, blanketing, wrapping legs and cooling horses out after a workout. Basic handling skills are the foundation for all interactions with horses and these skills abilities can only be developed over time. This is why its beneficial if the worker has gained diverse experience working with horses of different ages and breeds. Proper Grooming Techniques Grooming is a very important part of equine care and maintenance. All equestrians should be familiar with the different grooming equipment used on horses including the curry comb, mane comb, soft bristle brush, firm bristle brush, hoof pick and sweat scraper. It is also beneficial for equestrians to be able to operate body clippers to trim excess hair, especially if they are working in the showing industry where careful grooming is highly valued. Proper grooming keeps a horses coat healthy and the close observation of the horse during the grooming process can lead to early detection of potential health issues. In order to properly execute your grooming duties, you must be willing to work outside and in any type of weather. And since it can be a taxing job, its important that youre physically fit. Recognizing Health Issues Horses have a particular knack for injuring themselves on a frequent basis and it is fairly common for equine professionals to binnensee a variety of cuts, abrasions, leg injuries and colic cases. Colic is an event of severe abdominal pain that often requires veterinary treatment. Those working with horses should be able to judge the severity of an injury, deciding whether a vet should be called or if the injury can be handled by the farm staff.Staff members should also be able to detect small changes in each horses behavior or eating habits that could indicate the start of a problem. Administering Basic Health Treatments Individuals working in the horse industry should be able to apply leg wraps, treat small wounds, give oral medications and complete other basic healthcare tasks without assistance. And whenever appropriate, they should be able to recognize when a horse needs more advanced treatment and refer the animal to a trained vet. Those working specifically in equine health career paths such as equine veterinary technicians should be able to give injections, collect blood and perform more advanced medical treatments. Recognizing Behavioral Signals Horses give many signals that can telegraph their impending behavior.Handlers should always pay careful attention to the horses ear s.The position of the ears can indicate aggression - when flattened or pinned back against the head and neck - fixed interest or fear - when pricked sharply forward - and distraction - when swiveling back and forth.Other areas of the body that can hint at behavioral changes include teeth, legs, and the positioning of the head and neck. Similarly, those working with horses should also be able to detect behavioral issues from a horses tail, lips, jaw and nostrils. All of these body parts will give out clues as to whether the horse is relaxed and happy, or agitated and unhappy. For example, a loose lower jaw indicates the horse is happy. A tight and drawn lip line may indicate tension in a horses demeanor. Conformation and Anatomy Equine professionals should have a basic knowledge of equine anatomy and what a well-conformed horse looks like.At the most general level, a groom should know the basic points of a horse, focusing especially on the legs and hooves - areas that frequ ently require wrapping or other special attention. Basic Riding and Training Techniques While some equine careers do elend require any riding or training ability, it is still important for workers in the equine industry to have a general knowledge and appreciation of riding and training techniques. Those seeking riding-intensive positions - such as dude ranch wrangler - should have exceptionally strong riding skills. Those seeking trainer positions should have knowledge of positive conditioning techniques, equine behavior, and industry performance standards. Equine Nutrition Anyone working with horses should have a general understanding of equine nutrition. This may include knowing how much feed is required for each horse, how to mix it and whether a horse may require a special diet because of illness or age. Those working with horses should also be able to recognize when the animals stop eating and refer them to qualified vets for treatment. Ability to Communicate With O thers All equine workers should have the ability to communicate clearly with others in the equine industry (such as veterinarians, grooms, and trainers) to ensure that the needs of the horses are met in a timely and efficient manner. The coordination of equine care should always be a priority for all industry workers.
